Yoshio Hayasaki and his colleagues have discovered that data can be written into a human fingernail by irradiating it with femtosecond laser pulses. Capacities are said to be up to 5 mega bits and the stored data lasts for 6 months - the length of time it takes a fingernail to be completely replaced."

Wow. This is pretty sweet. Right now, it seems they can only do it on detached nails. 5MBits works out to be around 625kBytes. I can see it now, you'll have all this data encrypted on your fingernails, and a tiny little RFID chip embedded in there. Those dudes with the really long nails will finally have some purpose in life!

Funny commentary can be found here.

TM

iPod: I've got wood...

Bit-Tech: Real Wood iPod

I'm deviating a bit from what I normally post here. The article cites saving people with batttle wounds, gunshot wounds, or other instances of major blood loss as one of the uses of this procedure. In a manner similar to humans, the 77 pound as yet unnamed robot has artificial lips which can alter their position subtly as air is forced through them, enabling it to play a trumpet as it presses the stops with its hands. After completing the tune, the robot bowed to the audience and then waved its arms in response to applause.

Joining the walking humanoid was a wheeled humanoid trumpeter, standing about 40 inches tall and weighing in at 75 pounds. The two robots played a duet of "Bugler's Holiday." "

Ok yeah, playing the trumpet is pretty damn impressive. Especially since they played Bugler's Holiday (remember that tune Ajax?). But, how is having super cool lip control going to translate into taking care of seniors? Wait, no, I don't want to know. "Google Blogoscoped" offers an excellent overview of the presentation. The system has been trained using the United Nations Documents as a corpus. This corpus is some 20 billion words worth of content. It uses existing source and target language translations (done by human translators at the U.N.) to find patterns it then uses to build rules for translating between those languages. Apparently it was successful where the current version had failed in translating certain phrases. Let's not be coy here, ladies and gentlemen:

"Well, you'll see basically everything," said Bill Scannell, a privacy advocate and technology consultant. "It shows nipples. It shows the clear outline of genitals."

Wow. This is crazy. I don't know what to say about this. I experienced some new airport technology recently, when I left Jacksonville. I stepped into a machine (too small on the top, I might add), then was buffeted with small jets of air. It was really Total-Recall-esque, there were little foot marks where you had to stand, a turnstile type barrier to keep you in the machine, and a little LCD showing the machine's progress. I assume this machine checks for chemicals or radiation or something.

The main issue is that the people going through it were definitely a little freaked out, as it was something new, something they hadn't seen before.
